Ultrafiltration
The B&P-ultrafiltrationB&B has launched the production of another, even more advanced version of ultrafiltration facilities. The idea underlying the new project was to expand the length of the production cycles between consecutive phases of washing, which increases the output.

As a result, a new ultrafiltration facility has been developed, which combines a number of proven solutions with new features going beyond the initial concept. The application of a double tank for cloudy juice and a modification of the software has brought the following advantages:
  • cloudy juice is fed into the facility almost continuously and it is directly subjected to ultrafiltration;
  • possibility of prolonging the filtration cycles up to 30 hrs without decreased efficiency;
  • reduction of decreased filtration efficiency during a single cycle;
  • fully automated process of washing and rinsing of the facilities, integrated into the standard control procedures;
  • easy and cost-effective increase in the efficiency of the facility;
  • decreased workload of the filtration membranes due to the more frequent and thorough rinsing procedures;
  • relatively reduced amount of recirculated juice and an increased retentate pumping frequency effectively improve the control of the growth of microorganisms in the juice.
New Ultrafiltration - Technical Characteristics:

As regards the solutions known so far, usually 2 tanks are used: one for the cloudy juice before the filtration and another one for the filtrated clear juice.
Our new solution employs a single tank with two partitions which divide its whole capacity into 3 tanks. Two tanks function as the batch tanks to feed the circulation and accumulate the residue formed, while the third one is for the completed product.
Due to such a subdivision of the tank, its surface has been reduced significantly when compared, for example, with cylindrical cross-section tanks. We have managed to compactly mount a whole set of tanks – together with the engines, valves, and the pipes - on a single metal frame. Consequently, the whole ultrafiltration facility occupies less space and is easier to transport. Also, it is much easier to connect to any peripheral devices. The whole ultrafiltration process is controlled using a control panel in the box mounted on the same frame.

Due to our special user interface and control software, the operator selects appropriate options using a 17" touch-sensitive LCD panel, on which the whole filtration process is visualized. In this way, you can follow all the changes in the output of the facility on the screen. A programmable device driver makes it possible to easily adjust the facility on-site to various applications in various configurations, depending on the end user’s needs.
Thus, based on the solution described above, B&P can offer different ultrafiltration outputs, depending particular needs.

Technical Problems Solved by the New Ultrafiltration:

The product is evacuated more quickly and thoroughly before the washing and rinsing process. During the normal filtration or washing process, 2 tanks are used. At the end of one process, before the beginning of the next one, the pump is temporarily pumping the condensed residue only into the first tank, while the second one – having been emptied in this way – is being filled with fresh juice. In the next step, the pump collects the fresh juice from that tank, pressing the condensed residue out for the membranes into another tank, which is then emptied. Similarly, during the washing process, one tank is being treated with a chemical or a disinfectant, while water or another washing formula is being prepared in the other tank. Because of such an arrangement, the whole cycle has been sped up.
Should a breakdown occur (such as the loss of power, engine damage, etc.), automatic evacuation and neutralization are possible by moving the contents of one tank into the other. Should any membrane become unsealed, the facility automatically switches into the internal circulation mode to prevent the juice in the tank from becoming contaminated. After the reason for cloudiness is eliminated, the facility automatically switches into the normal filtration mode.

Operating the Facility

The new B&P facility has been given an even more user-friendly interface and control software. That is why it is very easy to learn how to operate it. The operation of the facility requires only occasional attention, as it has been equipped with a number of safety features to prevent the destruction of the membranes due to an error or lack of continual supervision.
